Ideas of Escape in Fahrenheit 451

Several months ago we did an activity on "escapism" where every student was to find an image on the internet that fit the definition of escapism and explain why.

Here are 5 examples of images people chose:

Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5

The idea of escaping an unpleasant reality and the ways people choose to do that has been a major theme of Fahrenheit 451 in our reading so far.

In a word document, make note, in paragraph form, of two different examples of people attempting to escape an unpleasant reality in the book (either literally or metaphorically) and explain why these are good examples using the definition of escapism (linked above). Please refer to a specific page number when giving your examples.

When finished, copy and paste your paragraph as a comment to this post.

In the book i think that clarisse is trying to find a way to escape the world she was in and go back to how things used to be like for example when she asks Guy how come people light the fires instead of putting them out like they used too. On page 8

Another one was when Mildred Guy's wife took all her pills. I think she was also trying to escape from the world she was living in. On Page 13

  3. In the book, there are two examples where they try not to think about the bad things in life and just escape that thought. One example is on page 7, when Mildred asks questions because she thinks like in the past... she don't understand why they put the fire on instead of just putting the fire out like any normal people. Basically, she just wants to escape that thought because she don't understand.

My second example is on page 13, it says " Guy Montage face was like a snow-covered island upon which rain might fall, but it felt no rain; over which clouds might pass their moving shadows; but she felt no shadow." I choose that quote to go with my example, because once again she is trying to escape that thought which escaping is all about.

The first example of escapism that I found in the book was when Guy Montag’s wife Mildred too the over dose of medication. I think she did that to get away from the world and what her husband did for a job. P.13
Another form of escapism is when the woman was trying to burn the books with herself in the house beside the books. She doesn’t want to leave because she does not like what the firemen do, and will have no life after so she has no reason to live and thinks burning in a fire is the best way to go. She will go down knowing that she had dignity. P. 38-39

  5. On page 29 of Fahrenheit 451, Clarisse describes the smell of leaves. She says that they smell like cinnamon. She makes Guy Montag smell the leaves as well. I think that Clarisse gets lost in her mind when she visits places including nature. Not just nature, but anything that is calm and peaceful. She says that she sometimes goes outside at night and just looks at everything peacefully. Her way of escaping reality is actually finding the calm side of it. Escapism means to seek distraction and Clarisse definitely succeeds when she goes night-walking.

Guy Montag finds his own way of seeking distraction on page 25. It says that he sits in bed listening to the sound of laughter and the piano-string scurry of rat feet. Montag escapes from reality when he lies in his bunker, thinking of things and listening to the sounds that surround his life. Escapism is about seeking distraction. Guy seeks distraction by laying down and using his senses.

"The dark eyes were so fixed to the world that no move escaped them" P.5 ... Guy can't seem to escape Clarisse's stare and what she has to say to him.

"They walked in the warm-cool blowing night on the silvered pavemet and there was the faintest breath of fresh apricots and strawberries in the air." P.6-7... This scene seems like a place you would like to escape to. Get some peace and quiet.

The first example of one situation were people try to escape from there world is then in the beginning of the book when Guy Montag’s wife Mildred take many piles and doesn’t realize that he has token too many piles. She doesn’t even realize that she has once again when overboard. She wanted to escape from all her problems even if she didn’t do it intentionally. To me she must have had done it multiple time for not sending the doctor sending an intern.(Page 19)

The second example Clarisse Montag’s neighbor explains how she likes to escape form the reality sometimes, for example when it rains she likes to stick her tongue and taste the water is if it takes like wine and she really tells herself that it’s wine, I believe that in a certain way she would like to escape from all her troubles. She wants to be in her own little world where she can control what happens to her.(Page 21)

An example of escapism in the book would be when Mildrid took the pills and swallowed them all and did an ovredose and had to go to the hospital. P19

An other example of escapism in the book would be when clarisse, tells neighbor that when it rains she sticks her tongue out and says the water tastes like wine. I think this is a way of escapism because she doesn’t want to face the reality (page21)

  9. There is one part in the book where I think Guy Montag escape reality. When Clarisse asked him if he was happy, he tried to change subject but then she left. While he was walking home, he thought about if he was happy, and when he was about to answer it, he changed ideas again. Page 10

  10. I remember when Mildred had an over dose of drugs by empting the bottle of piles without knowing. Its was not the first time I believe because they sand someone of less serious. The page this information is page 19

Clarisse is a weird neighbor because each time it rains out side she putt’s here thugs out and she say’s it taste like wine. sabrina c

  11. In the book, Mildrid empties a bottle of pills, by swallowing them all. This is an example of escapism. She wants to drug herself to forget her problems. (p19)
Clarisse, assumes that the rain drops taste like wine. (p21)

    (Page 9 para#1)

In the book Guy explain that his uncle drove forty miles an hour once on the highway to escape the idea od missing things will'll driving to fast. If i can take an example of the book the grass beside the highway or the flowers. Might sound stupid to do what he did but it makes sense to me if you think carefully. But its not a good idea to do if you don't want to be arrested and go to jail afterwards like his uncle.

    (Page 13&14)

If i can take an other example it would be the wife of guy when she tries to kill herself with her own pills, an overdose to be more precise. She tried to escape from her problems or sadness by killing herself. Maybe it is not a responsible way or the best way but she felt that it was the only way to escape from what she was scared or what so ever. Thankfully for guy she is not dead and the fact that she tried to kill herself will maybe help their relationship between them two.

My first example for someone trying to leave their unpleasant life would be when Meldride decides to take pills and do an over dose. I also believe that it is not the first time that she trys to take her own life away because when she took the pills the last time the ambulance didn’t even rush to go the help her so when that happens I believe its because happened before.

An other example of escapism in the book would be when Clarisse tells her neighbor that when it rains she sticks her tongue out says the water tastes like wine. I think this is a way of escapism because she doesn’t want to face the reality.

    1) Montag wife tried to suicide her during the night because she wanted to escape every problem she had. The pain she was going through, All the medication she was taking to sleep, maked her think their was no reason to life, no reason to keep walking a feet after the other. Too much pills, got her to a depression. She was always staying inside, listenning to television, reading, just not doing anything than staying on the coach. That's the way she thought everything would go better, escapism.

    2) Montag has another way of escapism. Buring houses. He felt good about it. Seeing the redish-black sky, his eyes becoming orange flame, the house jumping up in the fire, the sound and smell of it. The books going up in the sparkling, his heart rushing because of the adrenaline. He's forgetting about everything, his mind comes blank like he would like it would be everyday. He felt relieved of all the pain he had. The hardness of staying up, and getting up every morning.

    1. One example of escapism in the book I could think of would be when Guy Montag is burning the books. I think that these were his wife’s book so now he is trying to burn them so he can stop thinking about her or he probably just wants to move on.
    2. His wife tried to kill herself by doing an overdose. This just proves a point that maybe she wasn’t living a good life or she was just living well with Guy. She wanted to move on and go to a better world without suffering and leaving her peers and family memebers.

    1. My first example of escapism in the book that I am going to write about is that his wife trued to kill her self which is an example that she is not liking her life and doesn’t want to be in the world any more she wants to be somewhere else where she wont have any problems and she can have a good life. I don’t remember the page I just remember reading about it.
    2. The second example of escapism in the book that I am going to talk about is that when guy was burning his wife’s books so that he could move on without having her stuff in his way and not to have anymore problems.

  17. Escapism to me is when someone try's to escape reality by thinking of something else, or distracting themselves with other things un-related to their problem. In the book Guy escapes his reality by listening to the sounds at night, while laying in bed. Clarisse escapes her reality by listening to the sounds of nature, it is similar to Guy's escapism.

Theirs a girl who is trying to escape from the world by killing herself. The fireman wanted to burn her book and she didn’t wanted to so when the fireman has put the gas all over her book she decided to light it up to be free from everything to not fight no more and to escape from life. (P.38, 39)

The fireman’s wife was depressed and was taking pills when she forgotten she had already taken her piles she went to get some more, and forgot again. She toke some more until she was unconscious so the doctors toke her blood out to put some new and good blood in. She was escaping from being sad all the time, from thinking of what she had done or not and she almost died. (p.13)

  19. In the book, page 12-13.

Mildred tried to kill herself with her pills. Escapism is the tendency to escape from daily reality or routine by indulging in daydreaming, fantasy, or entertainment. So by trying to kill herself she wanted to escape from the reality, routines…

Each house that the firemen burned because people had books, once, one of them surely read a book trying to escape from the world!!
