Change in Plans

Due to some technical difficulties in getting tests printed out, the grammar skills assessment I informed the class of yesterday will be postponed until tomorrow.

In place of the test, what I would like you to do is look at the Supplemental English section of this blog and pick 2 of the 3 posted activities to do. Take a look at all three and then decide which 2 you would like to do.

These are activities designed to highlight specific interesting tools or concepts within the English Language that may prove useful for developing your skills in the language.

In each case I have provided instructions, but feel free to ask me questions of clarification if you need to.

As with the blog posts related to our rights study, these posts count towards your term 2 mark; the more detailed your posts are, the better you are likely to do. As always I expect your name to be a part of the post, and in this case also please indicate your group #:

               Example: Bob Smith
                               Group 02
                               A Review of Grammar Sites:

Remember I am asking you to do two out of the three options during today's class, so use your time well!

List of 50 free online resources to help you with writing skills.

The two cite that I chose are:

I chose the writing centre, Hyper Grammar for a bad cite because it says that they have 26 short article to help us with ampersands, punctuation, character spacing, apostrophes, semicolons and commas, and the difference between i.e. and e.g. etc. Its good but in a way any student will take the time and read all this when u can check he answer really quickly.

I chose for a good cite common mistakes and problems because it show all the different way that people write a word wrong and you could also see the way you used to write it also and correct urself after then.

  2. Bon I tried doing another activity but it didnt work, apparently the website ceased to exist and the Wonderful Story or whatever got me nowhere so I went back on the second website to do the wordplay assignment but this time I chose the etymology section and read the Avacado section. I now know what the word originally meant which is testicle. Now I can go to bed a little smarter.. Great

  3. Tracy MP. : I believe the point of the site is to improve your writing skills. I think the site does very well it's job by giving you tips on how to improve. It is useful for free writing and story writing, basically anything that involves writing. I would recommend it to others because i think it helps and it is clear, it will also teach you how to improve your writing and it also shows you common mistakes.

I started with the word play games and i played the hangman game it was somewhat fun and basically all you had to do was choose a letter and try to figure out what the word was. I've chosen the wordplay, anagram because i find it interesting and fun to find. You are given a word and with this word you need to write another word though with the same letters. You need logic and patient. I love this kind of words!! We actually see how people does mistakes, and very well describe and detailed.

The second i have chosen is the questions that helps us write and put our punctuation at the right places. It helps us write with detail and descriptive sentence that helps us make ourwriting way more interresting. It helps us but improving our english. It could be used for any type of projects, like speechs, responses, any types of writing we need to do. I dont really know if i would recommended to others because personalle i find it quite boring.. because i think already everyone knows how to write and put their punctuation and detailed sentences.

    I choose these:
    1. 50 free online resources to help you with writing skills: I went on Grammar Girl and on this site she talks about what is proper grammar. Such as saying Gifted , is it a proper grammar or not? It was the new word of the month made for Christmas.

2.Wordplay: i played Hangman and all i had to do what try and find out what was the right word. I mostly used letters such as: a,e,i,u,o ... to start off my words. Then when i wasnt sure i would add other words until i could figure out what the word was.

Continuation of last post, etymology, overall is the origin of a word. It is the explanation of where the word comes from. See example in last post.

  12. 1. The first one that i tried was the Worldplay one. I played the hangman game which was somewhat fun as far as word games go. There wasn't a real strategy to it, just choose a letter that you think would make sense in that area.

    2. The second one I chose is the 50 online resources to become a better writer. I went in the practical tips section and chose 10 Steps Toward Becoming a Better Writing. They suggest things like planning before you write, how to pace yourself and the importance of not plagiarizing. Just basic, common sense tips.

    2. Wordplay Assignment, Tongue Twisters.
I think the tongue twisters are there to help you learn better how to pronounce words that sound alike, Example:
She sells seashells by the seashore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells.

The first site I went on gave tips to help with grammar and writing skills.
I think it was helpful, it gave 26 useful tips.
It would be useful for whenever we need to do writing projects (responses, short stories ect...)
    http://www.betterwritingskills.com/writing-tips.html

The second site I went showed common mistakes people make while writing, and how to avoid making those mistakes ourselves.
This site would also be useful whenever we have writing projects to do.
    http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/06/28/50-free-resources-that-will-improve-your-writing-skil

Oxymorons are where two words that have opposite meanings are put together, ex: Only choice

  16. tracy: Tongue twisters: This wordplay is basically showing sentences that are tricky to say but that are also funny and fun since you have to say it as fast as you can. for example: Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?

    Anagrams definition:
Two different words with the exact same letters just in a different order.
    For example fir cones Conifers.
A decimal point I’m a dot in place

After looking at the site grammar girl I believe that it’s a good site if you are ever looking for help in grammar because it gives you links to other sites to help you with your specific needs.

  18. Sab Stg:

on Wordplay: a palindrome is a word or phrase which reads the same in both directions. Like, racecar or Do geese see God?

    Tongue Twisters:
is a tricky rhyme or phrase that you say as fast as possible without tripping over the words like

I chose the writing centre, Hyper Grammar as bad site because it says that they have 26 short article to help us with ampersands, punctuation, character spacing, apostrophes, semicolons and commas, and the difference between i.e. and e.g. etc. Its okay but i don't think that anyone will search up a specific site just to find that out.
