Escapism Assignment

ESCAPISM:

Based on our questions of "Why do we read?" and "What makes something worth reading?" Today I want to talk about the concept of escapism.

Your tasks:
  1. On your own, in a word document, craft your best guess as to what a definition of the word escapism might be.
  2. Share your definition with a partner, and see if there's anything you can add to your definition.
  3. Check out the actual definition of escapism here, and paste it beneath your own in your word document
  4. Beneath the two definitions (yours and the one from the internet), take note of whether your definition fits with the real one. Does your definition have something you think the internet definition is missing (or visa versa?)
  5. Given these definitions, conduct a search for some kind of media (picture, video, short story, article, etc.) that you think fits with either definition of escapism. Copy the link to it, paste it into your word document and write up a paragraph that explains why you think your example could be a good demonstration of escapism.
  6. Post the link and your paragraph as a comment to this post (make sure you put your name on your comment).
  7. Find two posts your classmates have made and state whether you agree or disagree with their paragraph (and why, obviously) in your word document.
  8. Email and/or save the word document with me.

  1. I think this represents escapism because the boy is trying to escape from where he is by trying to run away and climb over a wall which is probably what is keeping him from escaping. His way of escapism is to run away from his problem or home etc…

  4. ESCAPISM

To escape from reality, to let your soul reach dreaming, to be in your own perfect world, to live with your self and the few people you really love from the bottom of your heart.

This picture perfectly represents Escapism because of the fact that people usually describe wanting to escape, being caged in, etc. This picture shows a bird finally escaping and finding freedom outside the bars.

I Believe this picture represents the definition because it explains how escapism makes you seek entertainment or engages you in fantasy, and in the picture there is a girl looking into another world, as if she is escaping from her world.

I find this Picture represents a good comedic way of really telling you what escapism represents because the guy has a dream that he’s filthy rich, which would be his biggest dream but once he wakes up he realizes that reality has come spinning back around to slap him in the face since he’s just a dirty bum.

I chose this picture because it’s funny. Sometimes you’re in class and you don’t want to be there, so your mind wanders to ‘space’, I guess. Or when you’re reading a book, you’re still reading the book. You’re reading every word, but you don’t notice that you’re still reading until you snap out of this trance, then you have to read that part of the book over again.

I think this represents the word escapism well because he takes some of those mushrooms and is in his dream world. He escapes from his boring life to a world that makes him happy and energetic. That’s why I think this is a picture that best describes the word escapism.

I think that this image represents my definition because this image is about a bird that escapes his cage. Sometimes animals or people have to escape something or a place. This bird was maybe tired of living in this cage so he decided to escape his cage and go on another gerny or just fly for a little moment.

I also think it has to do with escapism because she is having problems and unpleasant things happening in her life. I believe the picture I chose is a good idea of escapism because when people are suffering from sadness or depression most of the time, they want to be alone in there own world. In the place where they can escape. They want to be isolated from the world, away from the pain they had.

I believe this picture represents escapism because sometimes, you need to take some time on your own to realize what matters the most to you and what doesn’t. Forget the bad things that happen, and look forward to a better future. Focus on the things you love the most and invest more time on people who truly love you. Escapism is a way to escape from you problems and engage yourself on better things. This is what I think this picture symbolize.

Each section was different from each other. in each section it showed us very well that people had know right to stay in there country and be whoever they want to be. The rights of human being were not respected. The chapters were rude and you had to be selfish and to lie through many chapters to not get caught. This made e realize that were lucky to live here in our country, to know that we wont hide all our lives… now that I know how refuges lives there lives its kind of sad to think that any people in many countries are fitting every day for there lives and that here in our countries any people wants to end up there lives for whatever reasons.

this is my escapism of real life, you get to step down a step, relaxe, chill with your buddies aka keith rioux and toke up like cheech and chong and puffin our bongs on our way to hong kong... basically, it just reveals you to your inner self! the real definition of escapism.
