Setting in "The Chrysalids"

Now that we've read to the end of Chapter 5 of The Chysalids, we have been made aware of where in our world the story takes place. In a word document, write up a hypothesis as to why you think the Author, John Wyndham, might have chosen this location. When you have a complete idea, post it as a comment to this post.

Back up your hypothesis by researching the author and the location in question. Remember that The author has given us clues about other locations in the story as well. Now that we know the location of Waknuk, where might the fringes and the Badlands be? What do you think has made the world the way it is?

I've phrased this post vaguely so as to not give information away to people who have yet to reach this point in the novel, but please be specific in posting your responses.

  1. I think that it’s because they had technology advancement like us now and that they had lost it all and that it’s possible that it was done as a punishment. Where as the old people didn’t have the technology they survived with out it for a while there and that they have thought it was better off without the technology. That’s why the kid’s dream of the future from then is our’s now and that theirs is like it was long before any of the technology we have now came into place.
A reference from wikipedia: “The inhabitants of Labrador have vague historical recollections of the "Old People", a technologically advanced civilization which existed long ago and which they believe was destroyed when God sent "Tribulation" to the world to punish their forebears' sins. The society that has survived in Labrador is loosely reminiscent of the American frontier during the 18th century.”

  2. After researching on the author, I discovered nothing. Then, I looked at a Wikipedia page on the book and found that the author had chosen Labrador because of the nuclear bomb could have affected Labrador which I believe is why he chose this specific place.

After I researched about the author John Wyndham, I think he chose to be located this book in labrador because he thought of what happend in 1945 with the nuclear bomb and thats why he chose this place. But he also could have chosen this place in pure coincidence.

  4. I believe that the author chose this place because waknuk is a place with bizarre habits, and in the book it talks about people with bizzare charecteristics. - tracy mp

I didn't thought it was there, but I'm sure something special had happened, for all this stuff happening.

  6. i think the author chose newf and labrador because the 'old people ' had expanded their horizons so they had given a name to the surounding land. as of these 'new people' in waknuk they have not expanded their horizons because anything outside their village is bad. they need to stop thinkinh everything is bad and that everything is about god because it is not. i think he chose these areas because back when the book was made not many people knew of the regions and it was more or less a mysterious piece of land that not many people visited. and that fit in well with the story. 7. the story the chrysalids probably takes place in labrador because it's on an island and it would be harder for people to return thus the saying wild country means people out side of their place probably dont know how to make boats

  8. i think that the badlands and the fringes would maybe be like in hell or something like that. or maybe like somewhere in the oceans on a boat or something like that. It takes place on the island of Labrador, near Newfoundland, in Canada.

  9. i think that this story happened in the areas of labrador, because i read the book i think this story was based in labrador because it is on an island surrounded by water and no one knows what is happening around the world

  10. I think the author chose that location because the society in Labrador is already kind of 'Old Fashioned'. I think that's why he chose Labrador, because it would be easy to set something in the past if the current state of the city is already old fashioned. In Labrador the towns and small, just like in the story.

  11. i think the auther had put them in labrodor because labrador is more isolated from the rest of the country so its the perfect place to be if you dont want contact with the other people.

  12. I believe the Other has put Labrador in the story because it is a very small and unknown place so nobody will know about them. Its also a place that's known to be old fashioned. This is why I think he chose Labrador.
