Reflections

On Thursday we looked at and played the game "Against all Odds" put together by the UN.

Looking over the comments left by people who have finished there were a variety of reactions, both positive and negative.

One point which pops up more than once is the suggestion that the game was hard because,
a) It wasn't clear what you were supposed to do or,
b) That you knew what to do but didn't see the point.

If, as the title screen of the game suggests, the point of the game is to make players feel like they are living the lives of refugees, do you feel like it did a good job?

Take a look at the webfacts section of the game. This section is designed to give players extra information to help them know more about the conflicts and problems they face in "Against all odds".

Today's task is to look at the webfacts pages for a few of the games that you played on Thursday. In a paragraph comment response, please tell me whether you think the game did a good job of representing the information it claims to. If yes, why do you think it is well presented (use examples), if no then tell me how you would re-design it so that the information was better presented.

The most important way to defend people's rights is to inform them of what they are. My question for you today is, how does "Against all Odds" help people, and how could it do its job better?

  1. I think that the game did a great job of representing the life of a refugee. I think it did the best in the first game, when you had to answer the questions, although they were hard, once you got the hang of it, it was easy. Basically you had to answer everything the opposite of what you would normally answer. And the second part when you had to escape the police, i thought that portrayed it good enough.

It helped people see what it is like for other people living around the world, people actually have to go through this, constantly escaping the law. I think that if they made the game more clear and understandable for people it would make it a lot better.

To people who are serious about learning about the refugees it could help to see their point of view but personaly I live my own life and immigrants don't affect me and I believe that even if they are faced with political something to die, ect. they should stay in the country they are for not only do they bring their problems to Canada but some insist as to bring their religion or culture also. Les accomodements raisonable are exagerated and make us wonder, who really are the priority in Canada? Ones who have lived here their whole life, ancestors helped create our history or people who bring their religion here and destroy our government. Refugees to me, should not be supported, even less listen to their 'opinions' because if mine means nothing to the government, than they mean nothing to me.

The game was helpful in a way of seeing how those people had to live, and how it would be hard to put ourselves in their place. It showed how much those people were unlucky and makes us think of what we have today and how we are lucky compared to them.
I think the game was very good at making us see what it was like for the refugees but it could be better if it was a little clearer.

we think that the game was well developped and it had a clear message to how a refugee lived their life. in each chapter the game had different things a refugee has to go through sometimes and that made the game clear of what it is trying to make us see.

  8. I think they did a good job on making this game because i can now in some ways understand what other people in this world are really going through. the game started out hard but once you got the hang of it, it really wasn't that bad. what i didn't like is how you have to make sacrifices. the one i hated the most is giving up your friends and family to save yourself. i would never be able to do that. if this was also a real life situation i was going through, i would never have been able to get as far as i did in the game.

  9. i think they did a good job because by the way they make the games its was making us learn more on who life is different from here and that make me see that we are lucky to have all what we have now.

i did not like the game because i don't really know what a refugee is so it was hard to understand what to do in the game. It was very interesting the different things that you had to do as a refugee but i just did not under stand the game.

1.i think they made a good job because we can see how other people are being treated in other countries.

2.it helps people to understand what is going on in other countries and how they are treated unequal because of the place they come from.

I think that yes it did a good job because it should us a bit of what people in africa or around there, what they have to face when people try to kill them because they have too much power or they just don't agree with them.

I felt like they did a good job to make us see what the life of these people are. We get to see that they must answer right when people ask them something or they just might end up dead. I believe the game did a good job to show us that these people have few rights. In the game War and Conflict we are asked to answer a questioner and some of the question where opinion questions but you had to answer the way they wanted, for examples they ask if homosexuality is a crime and you are supposed to answer yes or else they punish you. But here people get to have there own opinion, no homosexuality is not a crime, and of course some people will say it is but at least we get to have an opinion on it.

I believe “Against All Odds” did a good job at showing us that we are lucky here in Canada to have as much rights as we do because we get to live the life of people from other countries and some of them are not as lucky as us. It’s almost as if they where brain washed , they must live like the people in control of this country want them to. They must have the same opinion as them or else they are wrong. I think they could helping them so people get to have an opinion about things ad are treated as equal as everyone else

  15. I think that the game is great. it permited me and everyone that played the game to see how really it is not easy to be a refugee. Even if i am not a refugee the game permitted me to put myself in the a refugees shoes when escaping, trying to feel how it is to leave a friend to be able to survive or be able to escape. Throughout the whole game i understand that the game was to make me and other people to know how it feels to leave familly, friend, home, behind to start a new life in a new country. Even if it is simply a game, if a cros a refugee on day i might not see that person like i used to seen her before playing the game.

  16. I think the game did a good job, in a fun way you could see life as a refugee and what they all had to go through and how hard it could be to be them...

This game can make people realize whats going on in other countries and understand how our live over here is way easier then over there.

    Against all odds
The web site game against all odds is set up well because they set you up In the situation that your being interrogated about your rights in a foreign country, where I personally would not of survived because every time I answered a question that I would not of felt comfortable going along with then the page that we were answering on would slowly get covered in blood which is a good way of representing this situation because it makes you realize that the game gives you 10 chances to survive and yet in a real life situation after answering only one of these ten questions wrong would be the breaking point of whether or not you actually survive your visit to a foreign country.

We think the game against all odds was a fun game. It was about making choices but they might not always be the right ones or the best ones to choose. We think its cruel how the girl was treated. If she would answer something wrong she would get beaten up or killed. The girl was judged because she was from another country.

  19. I think they did i good job with the game. its certain that the game was a basic/small image of what their life could look like and how they must feel to always run away, but in a way they kinda chose this life.

It showed how much those people were unlucky and makes us think how lucky were are to have all we have in our life compared to them. 21. I think that the game did a good job. I really felt like I could feel what it was like to be a refugee. I like how there were many steps like answering questions and how when you got the questions wrong, even if it was the "right" answer, you got hit. It really made me realize how some people have to live. I can't imagine how hard it must be to live not knowing if you'll ever have a home again. It's hard to believe that some people really have to go through this long, hard process. Without this game, I probably would of never known what some people have to live like.

  22. The game was good in general. I kind of feel like i know what it feels like to be a refugee, but i cant fully understand what it is. The game was easy in general but some parts of it was very hard to understand what to do. Some of the parts of the refugee getting rejected was kind of sad to see that people would actually do something like that.

    1. i like the game it teaches us something, like in one game no one would let him in because he was a refugee and i did kind of well in the game and like we can see in one part of the game the security guards are not being nice to the refugee they ask him to open his back to see if he had stolen something. the game was clear to me and i like it.

  23. The game was very good its just that it was hard what to do. I found it hard to get by the guards. After that I had a hard time finding shelter but it was definitely a great assignment to show me what a life as a refugee is

The game itself was easy but other parts were harder to understand what to do. The parts where the refugee would get rejected shows how hard it really is to be a refugee
