To begin, please follow this link to the website for "Against All Odds"
"Against All Odds" is a flash-based internet game developed by the United Nations Human Rights Commission (UNHCR) which comes in 12 chapters, broken up into 3 sections. It puts you in the role of a person living in a country under an oppressive government, who must leave in order to stay alive.
The 3 sections of the game are "War and Conflict", "Borderlands" and "A New Life".
Take the time to explore the world of the game, make observations, and then post a comment to this post with the following information.
Name:
1) What was your experience of the game like (overall)?
2) How did the different chapters make you feel?
3) Pick 3 chapters you explored and write down what rights from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights you feel were being violated and how. Feel free to refer to the UDHR here, or on your handout.
(chapters can be indicated by section, then number, so the first section would be 1:1,1:2, 1:3, 1:4, then the next section would be 2:1, 2:2, etc...)
Example Post:
Name: Mr. Lambie
1) I found "Against All Odds" to be a much bigger experience than I was expecting. People don't usually put a lot of thought into flash games but this one is full of information and different kinds of exploration of the troubles a person goes through in becoming a refugee. Sometime I found myself making decisions I didn't like, just so things would go better for me, and I find that troubling.
2) Each section of the game is so different I felt like I kept getting pulled one way, then back in the other... etc.
3) The three chapters that impacted me the most were 1:2, 1:4, and 4:2 because... etc.
Once your post is up, feel free to either keep exploring the game, or to work on Project #4, (due Tuesday, November 1)

ReplyDelete1) In this game, i noticed the rights of a human being not being followed at all, and the missions, each represented something people do have to go through.
2) In each section, it was really different from each other.
3) The three chapters i choose was; 1:2 , 2:3 , 1:4 & in each you can tell that they have no right to stay in their country or to be who they really are.
keano. 1:4
ReplyDeletei beat the game the second time i played. to beat the game i had to be selfish the whole game through or else i would end up getting caught.people did not have the right to opinion, they had to live their lives by the military, and or by the border country and or by new power in the country but if uu stayed uu had to make urself understood but everyone else speaks differently.
2:4
i had to find people to e with in agroup in a class room full of students that do not even speak the same langguage as the character. i felt that it would be very harhard to make urself understood in a country that doesnt even understabnd your language.
3:1
the stage i did was very difficult because uu have to apply for a job then once uu get the job you must go to the msll snd buy a phone but every time i go into a store there are people criticising me and jugdging me since i was from another country.. people are very prejudices sometimes..
i did not like it since it was prejudice
Josh: I didn't like the game. the different chapters were rude, disrespectful and more. chapters 1:1 1:2 2:1 were all disrespected and its because you have the right to have your religion, language, sex, color etc also the right to life.
ReplyDelete1) I did not like this experience just because I didn't have any ore rights but it is a good exercise to see what others live through everyday.
ReplyDelete2) We all think its easy to live here in hiding but you realize there are ore steps to living in hiding then we expect.
3) Thing 1:3, 2:1, 3:4 and the rights they violated were: #2,3,4,5, and alot ore..
u have to lie to go to a point to an other and risk your life and the life of other even if u love them
ReplyDeleteCybill
ReplyDelete1) i didn't like the experience because it makes you feel bad to really see how other people are treated and what they have to live through everyday.
2)we have easy our life but other people from other places have it really hard.
3)1:2 , 2:3 , 1:4 they are showing how rough it is for the other people when they have to leave there families and friends behind to hide from the police.
1. the game was hard and annoying
ReplyDelete2.it really showed me what a refugees life is like
3. they didn't respect freedom, honesty and respect others the same ay you would treat your family.
ex: For example the man asks for a place to live at the hotel,he admits to being a refuge and he gets beaten up and killed
Casey
ReplyDelete1) Overall I didn't enjoy the game much, it irritated me that i wasn't allowed to choose the answers that i thought were right. however, the game did make me experience how a refugee would live, which was interesting.
2) the different chapters made me feel like i was playing a different game with each chapter, because each chapter played differently.
3) 1:1, 1:3 and 2:1 all violated human rights by not giving you the right to your own opinion
Matthew Morin
ReplyDelete1) i did not enjoy the game because it was long and confusing. it also was not of my interest.
2) the different chapters confused me because it was like i was playing a different game each time.
3)1:1, 2:3 and 3:2 where all ones that i did not like because i the right answer was not my opinion when it should have been.

ReplyDelete1.Overal the game was okay
2. It made me realise that people aren't as lucky as us.
3.Our right were violated in ; 1:3 2:5 3:4
Jeff Auger
ReplyDeletei think what the game want to show us is that in other country they dont have all the same right and condition.
Mackenize Coulombe
ReplyDelete1. The game was fun because i now know what refugee has to go through and how we take advantage of our rights
2. The different parts of the game helped me understand how hard the life of an immigrant really is and how much risks and hard decisions they have to make.
3. chapters 1:1 1:2 1:3 i thought that where disrespectful especially the questions at the beginning.
rebecca CaronI
ReplyDelete1 didnt like the experience because it makes u think of how bad some places are.
2 as the game went on i saw the girl leaving her country and trying to move on with her life.
3 I didnt like the l.l one and the 3.2 one they were a little boring
Jordan Gillim
ReplyDelete1. I liked the game. It was fun to figure the right way to get to another country. At times it was annoying to find the right choice because I would have to restart. But overall, it was a fun game and I learned a few things.
2. The different chapters made me feel like it was helping me understand the process of fleeing the country. The different chapters made me feel like I was playing different types of games but with the same topic.
3. 1:1, 1:3 and 2:1 all violated human rights. All humans are allowed to have the right to give their own opinion and express the way they feel about something. These chapters showed that some immigrants are forced to answer incorrectly and that the government does not always follow human rights.
SHAMWOW!!!
ReplyDelete1) the game was kinda cool, but sometimes hard.
2) the different chapters was fun because we weren't always doing the same thing.
3) violated couple times .
Amanda Garrett
ReplyDelete1. I think the game was confusing
2.The different chapters showed how hard can be.
3chapters 1.4 was impossible to do

ReplyDelete1) Overall I liked the game but it also was nt very long. I was very confused and the purpose wasn’t clear.
2) They werent really described, I didn’t really know who they were.
3) 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, they did not respect the peoples personal decisions and rights
1. I liked the game, it was a good exercise to see what it's like for other people living around the world. I found the first chapter hard.
ReplyDelete2. It made me feel good about where i live, i don't have to go through all this stuff on a daily basis.
3. i think that 1:1, 1:3 and 2:1 all violated human rights completely.

ReplyDelete1)My overall experience about this game is that it is very educational when you do the first quiz and have to answer yes or no and then if you answer the wrong answer you get hit and start bleeding, i believe schools should be more like this!
2)The different chapters made me feel like i was one of the refugees and i had to escape like a Mexican and hop the border into a new country.
3)You have to lie to go to a point to an other and risk your life and sometimes even the life of others for you to be safe even though you love them.

ReplyDeleteI didn't really like the game that much, it was very confused, and didn't understand the purpose of the game.
The different chapters showed how hard it was for them to survive and the hard choices they had to make and deal with.
some of the chapters didn't respect peoples rights mostly chapter 1.1 where you had to choose certain rights in order to leave.
1) after all the game wasn't that bad, it was fun to play, its crazy to think that people are forced to leave their country. They are discriminated, and we don't think that is fair.
ReplyDelete2) We did not get through all the chapters...
3) They were discriminated, people talked about them without knowing them and they are forced to write some thing they don't even believe in. Our girl was beaten and was bleeding a lot.. stupid.

ReplyDeleteI think its a fun game exept that you need to consider the hard choices you would have to threw out the game which would be hard choices to make in a real like situation
Diana:
ReplyDeleteI think the game is too far from reality. In some of the games you have to scape from the military, but is doesn't explains why. There is no context to understand the situation, or how things turned out this way.
In the game, the government is trying to take away your rights. I know not every country follows what is established in the human rights, but I think the game is an extreme.
I feel sad for the people who live in difficult situations, where their rights aren't respected.
Some rights I noticed weren't respected are: the right to live in freedom and safety and nobody has the right to torture you.

ReplyDeletei liked the game its was very fun :P
i think that people dont judge people fairly in todays world
i did not do all the chapters but i was sometimes hard to do.
Marc-Andre Boisjoli-Jeanson
ReplyDelete1)-My experience of the game was very good.
2)-The different chapter didn't really make me feel a different way.
3)- 1:2 , 2:3 , 1:4-they dont have the right to stay in there own country.

ReplyDelete1.in this game i think that people didn't really cared about other peoples right
2.it make me realize that we are more lucky then them because we don't have to live this all the time meaning that we get caught and killed because we have escape our country
3.some rights were violated in chapter: 1:3 2:5 3:4
Jason Boissonneault
ReplyDelete1)I think that the game was boring because there wasn't a lot of action and it was just reading and clicking on stuff.
2)The chapters followed the stories flow but some stuff didn't make a lot of sense.

ReplyDelete1) I liked the game, because i find it helps us understand how life is around us. There's so much rights discriminated, though you needed logic to understand everything.
2) I finded that in every chapters, it was rude and mean. Rights were discriminated. Though i feel lucky to live where i live right now.
3) 1:1, 1:3 and 2:1 were all chapters that in my opinion they were rudely violated. In some chapters you needed to answer some question if you wanted to leave, though if you had a wrong answer you were beaten up. It's unrespectful. people are really pathetic!

ReplyDelete1)this game was kinda fun, and it really showed us what those people go through, and how hard it is to escape and most of the time you have to lie in order to live and all...
2)the different parts helped me understand more how a refugee life would be like. And how lucky we are here compared to them.
3) in each sections many right were not respected like; you have the right to live, and live in freedom and safety.
Jessica gaulin.
ReplyDelete1) In this game, i saw what immigrants go through by being judged and not respected. Overall, i didn't really like it.
2) In each chapter, it is different. But obviously, all chapters were rude and mean.
3) 1.1 & 1.2 & 1.3, they didnt repect peoples decision.
the game does a good job at portraying the life of an immigrant, it shows all the challenges and struggles. But the sorting part was impossible and needs improvement
ReplyDeleteyou could improve that part of the game by making the belt move slower and choosing objecs that are easy to associate with country
ReplyDelete1. I think the game was confusing at fisrt because we were not able to play and understand. But the second time i played i understand more the meaning of the games connecting to the movie we say.
ReplyDelete2.The different chapters showed how hard can be and to understand the way of life of other.
3chapters 1.4 was impossible to do because we had a hard time passing the some of the chapters. Sabrina C
The game tries to show us how refugees live or try to live. they have to constantly move an they can't really make a familly. The game was really a basic picture, because their lifes are really more complex than that !
