Public Speaking Preparation

Types of speeches:

The three permitted forms of speech for the public speaking contest here in the Eastern Townships are:

  • Informative
  • Persuasive
  • Argumentative

In a word document, write a brief definition (50-75 words) in your own words of what each of these forms is.

Be sure to address the following questions in your writing:
  •  What is the goal of each type of speech?
  •   What is the difference between a persuasive speech and an argumentative speech?
  •   What is not allowed by each type? (What should you not be doing in a persuasive/argumentative/informative speech?)
  •   What are the advantages of each type?

Upon completing your summaries, provide your answers to the following questions:

  1. Which type of speech do you find gives writers/speakers the most freedom to express themselves, why?
  2. Give an example of what you might see as an interesting topic choice for each form and explain why.
  3. Some topics, despite being interesting, lose their charm because people use them all the time. Give two examples of topics that have been "done to death."
  4. Toastmasters is a group that specializes in helping people become better speakers. Take a look at their list of the "10 Biggest Public Speaking Mistakes" and say
    1.  Whether you agree or not with the items on the list
    2. If there is anything you would add, from past experience.

When you have completed your summaries and answers to the questions, copy and paste your text as a response to this blog post and submit it

**Don't forget to put your name in your post**

Information on Persuasive and Informative speeches:

Toastmasters List:

Argument vs. Persuasion

10 comments:

  1. Informative: when you do an informative speech, usually its to inform you audience of the topic you chose. For example, if your topic is penguins, you want to inform the audience about like what they eat and where they usually live and what they do with their eggs.

Persuasive: if you do a persuasive speech you want to persuade that you though is the right one, that y our idea is the best and good one. For example, if i want to state that pink is the best color and that i want to persuade people that it is actually the best color i will have to make up my arguments and explain why and everything.

Argumentative: when you decide to do an argumentative speech, its not necessarily to, like a persuasive speech, persuade your audience, but to state an argument.

    1. i think that with an persuasive speech the writer has more freedom to speak because its in their opinion, and they say what they want.

    2. Informative: any like other religion, it would be a good topic because it informing you about something you probably don't know.
Persuasive: having a kid at low age, it would be a great topic for that because everyone has a different mind on that and there can be pros and cons.
    Argumentative :

    3. One topic thats been overuse is drugs, legalizing marijuana and everything around it. An other one that people have overused is car accidents drink and driving.

    4. agree

  2. Informative:Inform the audience about the topic they choose.
Persuasive:Persuade the audience, what they are saying it true.
    Argumentative:I don’t know.

1-Informative and persuasive, because they have the freedom to either inform or persuade their audience about their topic.
2-I think for each form, like a general idea, it would be about the “ end of world 2012 “, because everyone has a different opinion about it.
    3-Alcohol and car accident.
    4-Agree, no I wouldn’t add anything.

    Speech writing

An informative speech: when your writing an informative speech your looking to in form the people that your giving the speech too, on what your topic is about and making sure that your topic gets through to your listeners, in a speech like this your not usually supposed to express your feelings about the matter just stating the facts about the situation too make your speech as good as possible.

A persuasive speech: when writing a persuasive speech you don’t really need to hold back on putting emotion into your speech, you are able to present all the information you have behind your speech with feeling to be able to really get into the mind of your listener and make your speech as appealing as possible to your audience, that your trying to get through too.

An argumentative speech: when writing an argumentative speech you would be basing all the information you have as though you were facing an opposition who was representing the opposite thing that your representing, you aren’t suppose to make your speech emotional because your not suppose to be trying to make the person that is evaluating your debate, too feel good or bad about your topic, but too actually base their opinion on the information behind your topic.

    1) A persuasive speech would give the writer of the speech the most freedom to express them selves because they would not have to worry about their feeling’s about their topic, or worry that their emotions would get in the way because usually emotion adds emphasis on what your saying.

    2) In my opinion Speech’s that I find have been over done over the years are A) speech’s on the fact that people think that weed should be legalized, and B) speech’s done on animal abuse\ although it is a topic that deserves representation, but it’s been done a lot.

An informative speech is to inform about something that happened or that’s going to happen. A persuasive speech is to make others persuade about something, try to make them believe in it. And an argumentative speech is someone that’s replies or argues and tells their opinion about something that they are against. The Argumentative speech is the one that makes us express ourselves more because when you are argumenting against something all your opinions comes out. You can think with all your knowledge and logic. Makes us express our feelings or attitudes towards something. Well if I would do an persuasive speech it would be on the fact that teachers don’t let us enough time to have lunch and I would try to explain them that while lunch many of us needs time to eat, have fun with our friends and also having a break. Because for many of us school is hard, and in between the day we need time to relax.. If I was to do an informative speech it would be on a movie that’s going to come out and that interest me a lot, which would also make publicity around the town. I would talk about all the good things that the movie will have in it and also the message about it so people would be more interested. And if I would write an argumentative speech I would right it on the fact that scientist says that in December, 2012 it’s going to be the end of the world. Because I am against all this. My opinion is that scientist says this because they want to scare us so that we could be more careful with the nature and environment. Good speech’s, needs to have a good tone of voice with different voices, a message, an opinion, something that we learn… Well I agree with the 10 biggest speeking speech’s. Because I honestly think that you need to start with a punch and have a good beginning so that others will be interesting in what you will say afterwards and wont be bored. You can’t read what others already said or wrote because this is copying and also don’t read slowly because the public will be sleepy.

An informative speech consists of informing someone of a certain topic. In most cases it is people trying to educate someone or multiple people about something they are passionate about.

A persuasive speech is persuading people about a certain issue. They are trying to persuade you into having the same thoughts on the issue as they do.

An Argumentative speech is arguing a subject to make people agree with you, but it mostly consists of arguing against something you feel isn’t right.

An informative speech is a speech written to inform someone of information you may have. It explains to them the subject that you have chosen. You make them learn information about you speech. You are writing in your speech information that is useful for them to know about. What you should not be doing in this speech is giving your opinion. You should not state what your opinion is. The advantage of this kind of speech is that you do not have to have an opinion about the speech your are written you just have to have the information given out.

A persuasive speech is when you are trying to convince someone of something in your speech. You have an idea made about something and you want others to have the same opinion as you have. You want to make sure they see what you are trying to tell them. It’s different from an argumentative speech because you have to have your opinion about what is bet for the subject. What is not so great about this is that you have to have an opinion fixed about your speech but if you know exactly what you are in with you can make this kind of speech.

When writing an argumentative speech you have to have both side of the speech, You must show the two sides of your topic. You must explain the positive and the negative of it. You must explain both side and state your opinion for both of them. What is good about this kind of speech is when you are unsure of what side you really want to take. You can have both in the same stating that you are not for and not against. But this might also mean more work. You have to chose a topic you understand totally because you have to explain it all.

I think that the persuasive speech will give the opportunity more to express what opinion you have about the subject. You have the freedom to explain if you are totally with the subject or totally against.

Informative; Wars going on in the world
    Persuasive; Hybrid cars are better
Argumentative; driving license should be pushed to the age of 21.

I think the two topics that have been heard a lot are ; hockey fights and racisms.
A lot of people have chosen this topic because it interested them but became boring after a while when everyone does the same.

I am in agreement with the site. I believe that most of the points they have listen where right because in every class when comes speech time someone does all or most of theses things.

    Informative
    It gives information to people
Do not give our opinion because not informative
Give new information to people, they can learn new things on what you said

    Persuasive
    Convince people about your speech
The difference between a persuasive and argumentative speech is that a persuasive you have to convinced people and argumentative you have to say the advantages and the disavantages.
If you don’t have an opinion your speech won’t be long
Convinced people that your idea is the best.

    Argumentative
Argument about on topic in particular, you give the advantages and disavantages about your topic.
You have to have both advantages and disavantages so your speech is well understood.
    Explain both point of views.

    Kinds of Speeches

    Informative
An informative speech is a speech that informs you about a specific topic, the goal of this kind of speech is to let people know of what happens or what your topic is. The one thing you must not do in this kind of speech is to give your opinion. For some people it is easier to not give their opinion in a speech.

    Persuasive:
A persuasive speech is the kind of speech where you try to persuade people to agree with your topic; the goal of the oral presentation is to try to agree with what you are presenting. Unlike the informative speech in this presentation you must always give your opinion. In this speech a good way to persuade is to give them examples of your topic.

    Argumentative:
A argumentative speech is the kind of speech where you argue the subject you chose, meaning that you disagree with the topic you decided to talk about. The thing that you must not do for this kind of speech is even if you agree with your topic you must always show your audience that you disagree with that specific topic. The difference between a persuasive speech and a argumentative speech is that persuasive you want the audience to agree with you and argumentative you show them why do disagree with what is happening in this topic.

  10. Informative:
The goal of an informative speech is to inform the audience of a certain topic while providing information and facts. An informative speech is different than any other speech because the speaker/writer isn’t giving his/her opinion. They are simply giving information on the topic. There should be no 1st person writing in an informative speech unless the speaker/writer is using his/her own experience to provide information. The advantage of an informative speech is that the audience can learn a lot about a topic and understand which information they already know is true or false.

    Persuasive:
The goal of a persuasive speech is to persuade the audience and make them do something that the speaker/writer believes in. A persuasive speech is different from an informative or argumentative speech because it’s written to encourage the audience to do something. The other two are used to inform or make the listener have a different view of a problem or debate. In a persuasive speech, the speaker/writer shouldn’t insult the people that they are trying to target. The speech should be positive and encouraging. An advantage of a persuasive speech is that the speaker/writer has the opportunity to change someone’s way of living. They might see things differently and start to change in a positive way leading to the speaker feeling very helpful.

    Argumentative:
The goal of an argumentative speech is to express valid arguments against/for an idea or problem. Argumentative speeches are different from other types of speeches because they focus on the speaker/writer’s side of an argument. There shouldn’t be any mention of positivity from the other side of the argument. The speaker/writer should always stick to the side they are aiming to convince their audience to join. An advantage to an argumentative speech is that the person who presented the speech can gain followers to help him/her express their arguments (ex. Political parties).

    1. Persuasive speeches give the writer/speaker the most freedom to express themselves because they can talk about their own experiences and how those experiences have affected their own lives.

    2. An interesting topic for an informative speech would be Global Warming because people need to be informed about a problem that can/will affect them in the future. An interesting topic for a persuasive speech would be anything along the lines of getting in shape because the speaker/writer could have their own story to tell which could lead to persuading others to create their own story too. An interesting topic for an argumentative speech could be the idea of school uniforms because there are two sides fighting against each other.

    3. Legalization of Marijuana and Global Warming.

    4. I agree with the items on the list. I would add “Failing to provide relevant quotes and sources.”
