What to do?

While talking about rights in class, some students have turned to me and said things like "This is so depressing," or, "What is the point of this?"

I understand those perspectives. Sitting in our classroom looking at, reading about, and hearing about terrible things happening in other places can make a person feel sad and upset. Part of the point of this is to look at why you get those feelings from learning about world events.

Once you know something bad is going on, either close to home or far away,  you have two options. You can help, or you can hide.

As we've talked about, there are a lot of different bad things happening all over the world, all the time. It is hard not to want to hide from some of them; to pretend they don't exist. But hiding doesn't make them go away.

At the same time as all of the terrible events we've been hearing about, there are people out there in the world doing great and wonderful things to help every day. Take a look at some of the websites below and post a comment that gives an example of something that organization is doing to help people who are being denied their rights or freedoms. Some of the projects involve money, but many don't. Take the time to explore.

**or name one you already know, which is not on this list**

Your comment should say:
  1. Which site you visited (try to pick ones you see others have not gone to yet). Make sure there is a link.
  2. What project caught your eye (or what that organization does in general)
  3. How you think this group is helping to empower people, and give them back their rights.

  1. I actually didn't choose any of the choices above. I chose one that I already knew of. I chose StreetKing by 50 Cent.

This project caught my eye. 50 Cent is trying to feed 1 billion children. 50 Cent is real and is not letting the government slow him down or stop his plans.

I think this group is going to show people that anyone can help another person in need. 50 is going to give young children their rights to get a meal that actually keeps them alive. Kids are used as workers and slaves. They get nothing in return so this group will give them what they deserve.

    What project caught your eye?
The project that caught my eye the most would be that you could be a monthly donor. By becoming a monthly donor you can donate money, food, or medical help. Everyone can become a monthly donor.

How can this help other people?
This project can help other people by giving them more possibilities of having more healthy stuff, cures and more food to eat so the future generations do not have the same problem their parents had or their grand-parents had.

    I chose free the children

The project that caught my eye was when they said they are trying to to let the children achieve there goals in life. Also that they are trying to achieve so that they have clean water to drink and also health care.

I think this is going to get a lot of people people thinking about other people instead of them selves. This group is going to show a lot of people that anything is possible. They want to free the families from there poverty. I think this is possible but it will take a lot of work and effort.

    1. This site is about helping world where all young people to achieve there best potential. “Free The Children is committed to domestic programming because we believe that young people will change the world once they’re free from the notion that they’re powerless to make a difference. We know that sparking change at a domestic level is just as important as the work we do overseas”.
    2. They do there job well because they have hope in the children and there future and they want to help them as much as they can.
    3. They help children with there homes and help them with their education. They believe that children will change the world. Young people everywhere have a right to be free from poverty, thirst, exploitation and disease.
    4. Yes I would recommend this site to others because it believe that children can change the future and they help them as much as they can to reach there potiential

  8. For an organization a chose the UN when they tried to keep peace in Rwanda. i think it is a good example of an organization that tried to help people.

Since the day we watched the Shake Hands With The Devil in ethic class, i always think about UN organization and what they tried to do in Rwanda with the Tutsies & Hutu.

Even if they tried to make peace without guns it was hard for them to see many people die under their protection. They help as many refugees that they could by keeping them safe, giving food, roof, away from the Tutsies rebels.

Basically, they help with the world poverty, giving clean water, people with a sickness, human trafficking, homelessness, the environment, and oppression.

I believe that by doing everything they do, it helps out the society and shows people what it's like to have clean water, to have a home and to be noticed. Therefore, these founders have helped quite a lot of people.

  13. War Child’s goal it to improve access to education, to improve access to justice and to reduce poverty through increased employment opportunities.

it caught my eye because i remember the child soldiers in the video yesterday and that made me thinkn of that when i saw the war childs caption. this program helps lots of place over seas and what is good about it is that 95% of the employees are from the communities that they help.

    2. Can You Solve This is an organization based on education being a human right and how some religions in Iran are being refused to have this right. To solve this, they say all that is necessary is to send your government a letter explaining how you feel about this. It will definitely help and make a difference because those who want a good education are being refused and they cannot change it but we can and its simple to do your part.

the project i chose was invisible children. this organization is made up of hundreds of full time volunteers, and thousands of students and supporters. these people make documentaries about war-affected children in east Africa and tour them around the world.

The way i feel that they are helping these children is by get more information out to the public. They document the longest running war in Africa, and this fall, they are going to ask Barack Obama to help them achieve peace in Northern Uganda. With the help of Obama maybe they will accomplish their goals

the site that i visited is free child project it took my eye because it is solving a big problem that is happening today.

the free child project helps adults and youth better connect with children. it teaches them about the children to connect and understand them.

i think it will help later on because they will better get along and understand each other and not fight.

The War child project is a group of people who try to increase access to education and create a protective environment for the rights of children and youth, and also to prevent war for children.

I think the group is helping individuals by improving children's skills to better access opportunities for personal growth. It helps because they strongly want changes to be done, so that no child knows war.

I choose the link "Free the children"

    2) What caught my eyes were mostly the part where they are collecting money by doing foundation because some children are being abused and poor condition, for example no education and some of them don't even have parents. Its an organization that helps them live free, for example they donate water, cloths, food.. everything that helps children be in a better environment.

2)This organization helps these poor children have a better education. Everyone has the right to live free, and have an education, have food on their tables, being protected and being healthy. They have the right to have a home.

The primary goals of free the children are to free children from poverty and exploitation. I think this will help, because less kids will be mistreated in the world. Kids will be able to live there young life, without having to be in constant need of basic needs to survive, like food.

The project that caught my eye was the fact that you can be a monthly donor to help kids in need by giving money, food, or medical help.

This can help people by giving them healthy way of live even though they can't afford it.

Ive see a movie where theirs a group of children that are abused to look like they have disabilities and they then have to go on streets and collect money form random people. These people were taken in and suckered to become slaves and this higly disgust me because theirs actually stuff like this going on for African-Americans

I chose this one because I like the idea that people can donate monthly and not just donate once and never think about it again. And I like that they think that every child has the right to live and survive. I believe that this foundation is actually legitimate and not just trying to get your money.

    1) War Child Basically tries to help children and young people to flourish within their communities and overcome the challenges of living with, and recovering from, problems. To achieve this, War Child works collaboratively with those communities to increase access to education, overcome the problems of poverty and create a protective environment for the rights of children and youth.
    2) I believe it helps them give them back their rights because after going through conflicts it is hard for them to get through since they may have lost some of their rights for example the rights to education. War child helps these individuals improve their skills to better access opportunities for personal growth.
